If vacation is on your brain but recent destination searches have you dreading the amount of money you are going to spend, think again. I have just the little travel trick to share with you. It's called "Groupon Getaways!" Yes, you heard me correctly, but to satisfy your, "Eh-hem, what?" I will say it again, but listen closely...Groupon Getaways.
I know what you're thinking; Groupon is for purchasing discounted merchandise and personal services, not for vacations! How does it even work? Does Groupon have its own travel agency? Is this a scam?
Not to fret my friends, Groupon Getaways truly are 100% genuine and 200% worth the purchase! Trust me, I have three amazing Groupon vacations under my belt and many plans for more one of a kind trips in the future!

1st Day in Beijing (Bus Tour)
In this post, I will share with you all the little "Groupon Getaway" secrets, as well as why you too should choose "Groupon Getaways" for your next vacation. Keep on reading to discover all the little details about purchasing vacations through Groupon and why I have made it my go to vacation cyber company.
Up until about a year and a half ago, I too thought Groupon was just a virtual coupon driven merchandising company. Although I applauded them for their quite unique business strategy and operations model, I rarely shopped on Groupon and never just surfed their app for fun.
Once I discovered Groupon’s "Getaway" tab, they had me hook, line, and sinker. I mean it, with budget travel shopping being my favorite type of shopping and cheap travel deals being my favorite kinds of finds, I was enthusiastically sold! And, I definitely take the opportunity to just browse the getaways section now; you know, just for fun.

Our First Trip...
Our first Groupon vacation purchase was to the beautiful and majestic Iceland! Yes, at first I was a bit skeptical and nervous to finalize my purchase. The more I thought about it, I reminded myself that it is Groupon we are talking about, and Groupon has a great reputation. So, with that, and a little bit of wine-courage, I went for it.

Reykjavik, Iceland - View from Hallgrimskirkja Church
I purchased two Groupon's owned by Gate1 Travel; a 5 nights and 6 days Iceland vacation for $599 each. This price covered round trip air from New York City’s JFK International Airport and a five night stay at "Hotel Cabin," a nice hotel in downtown Reykjavik. After purchasing this trip, my initial thought was that the price could not be accurate. I surely was going to be slapped with some major taxes, fees, or some additional cost at some point. But, that never happened! Everything fell into place perfectly; I actually could not believe how easy it was.

Our Second Trip...
The second trip I purchased from Groupon Getaways was a 10 day, 5 city China tour with Rewards Travel China. If you thought the price for our trip to Iceland was impressive, you will need to be sitting down for what I am about to tell you. Through Groupon Getaways, I purchased two China tour packages for $849 each!

Hiking the Great Wall of China in Beijing
This price covered our flights from Detroit to Boston, Boston to Beijing, a domestic mid-trip flight from Beijing to Shanghai, and our flights from Shanghai to Boston and then Boston back to Detroit. The Groupon tour to China included the following five cities; Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Hangzhou. It is still hard to believe that the cost of all the above was only $849!
But wait, there's more! This one of a kind experience also covered five fantastic hotels in each city we visited. It also covered multiple tours to various attractions, two very knowledgeable and English speaking tour guides, and transportation. It also covered breakfast and lunch for each of the 8 days we were in China.
Our Third Trip...

Enjoying some Irish spirits in Blarney, Ireland
We visited the exciting, beautiful, and oh so fun Ireland! The owner of our "create your own itinerary" Ireland vacation was Great Value Vacations. Our Groupon cost was $749. This covered round trip airfare from Chicago, IL., 6 nights of lodging of your choice (choose from a very large list of Ireland B&B's from all over Ireland), and a rental car for your entire trip. We ended up paying a little extra, as we added the VIP insurance package to the rental car and the additional tour package. Still, however, it was definitely budget friendly.
How the "Groupon Getaways" process works
After you find your desired getaway and complete the purchase process, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to contact the travel agency who owns the Groupon. The travel agency who posted the vacation package to Groupon will then assist you with planning your trip.
If desired, through each travel agency you are able to add to your trip, various different excursions and/or insurances. For our Iceland vacation, we added medical insurance to our trip for $75 each. For China, we did not add any insurance to our package; however, a quote I received was about $150 each.
Gate 1 Travel is an exceptional company to work with. They are incredibly accommodating and provide excellent communication. The travel agents at RTC were also nice to work with; however, I did have to request communication and clarification from them a few times, but overall, they were fine to work with. Great Value Vacations is also a good company to work with. Honestly, I really did not have much interaction with Great Value Vacations representatives other than a few emails. Their online registration and confirmation process is very easy to use and understand.
So, why is it so cheap? I have been told that many travel companies will add deals to Groupon so to promote their company or brand and the services their travel agency has to offer vacationers. Also, while in China, I had been told that the Chinese Government supports tours through Chinese travel agencies, in hopes to bring visitors to China to explore the Chinese culture.
Both experiences were absolutely wonderful and it was equally as wonderful that the cost of each trip did not break the bank. This is why I choose to promote Groupon Getaways; its a budget friendly and reliable travel option. So, what do you say? Think you will give Groupon Getaways a try?
